If You Must Pick Them Up...

1. Put on thick, puncture-resistant gloves.

2. Use tongs, pliers, or something other

than your hand to pick them up.

3. Carefully put the sharps in a thick plastic

container (like laundry detergent or

kitty litter bottle).

4. Screw the lid on tightly and seal with

duct tape.

5. Write “DO NOT RECYCLE” on the

container and put it in the trash.

What NOT to Do:

NEVER pick up needles with your hands

NEVER put loose needles in the trash

NEVER flush needles down a toilet

NEVER try to break the needle

If someone is stuck by a used needle, they should wash with soap/water (not alcohol-based sanitizer). And within 72 hours seek emergency healthcare to

access PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis).
