Syringe Exchange Program

Founded in 2006, our syringe exchange program operates Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 - 4:30 pm at the Good Neighbor Heath Clinic (GNHC), a well-established primary care clinic for uninsured and under-insured people, located in downtown White River Junction, VT. GNHC provides a safe, anonymous, confidential and discrete setting for individuals who are actively injecting drugs to be able to access clean syringes in exchange for used syringes, thereby reducing the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV and Hepatitis C.

The syringe exchange is much more than just a place to exchange needles. We offer HIV and Hepatitis C testing to all of our clients. We also offer clients other clean injection equipment, bleach kits, and condoms as well as referrals to medical and social services and drug rehabilitation programs. We can reduce needle sharing behavior by encouraging more people to join and use our exchange. By providing education about Hepatitis C and HIV transmission and harm reduction techniques, we can help clients make better choices about their sexual and drug use practices. Through our collaborative relationships with other agencies, we can help clients access social and medical services.

We now have Narcan/Naloxone, the overdose prevention antidote, available as a nasal spray. If you or someone you know is at risk for overdose, please contact Laura for more information. Please do not call the Good Neighbor clinic with questions; instead call us directly.

Our syringe exchange program is anonymous. At their first visit, clients are given an “ID card” with a unique identifier that is not their name. Clients are not required to show their driver’s license or any identification.

Location: Good Neighbor Health Clinic at 70 North Main Street in White River Junction.
Hours: Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 4:30pm. Please do not arrive right at 4:30.

We offer free, anonymous and confidential HIV and Hepatitis C testing before exchange hours by appointment, and drop-in testing during exchange hours.
